“From alliances and coalitions to exclusions in environmental struggles?”
POLLEN 2026 – Political Ecology Network Conference
Barcelona, Spain | 29 June – 3 July 2026
Submission Deadline: 5 December 2025
We invite proposals for presentations at our roundtable “From alliances and coalitions to exclusions in environmental struggles?” to be held at the POLLEN 2026 Conference in Barcelona, Spain, from 29 June to 3 July 2026.
This roundtable examines how alliances – between humans, non-humans, and more-than-human actors – shape today’s environmental conflicts, political ecology debates, and social-ecological transformations. We are particularly interested in how coalition-building can both empower marginalized communities and reproduce exclusions.
Roundtable Focus
The session will follow a roundtable format featuring short participant inputs and an extensive collective discussion guided by core analytical questions.
We welcome submissions that explore:
- Alliances between communities, activists, states, corporations, non-human beings, or more-than-human entities
- The politics and power dynamics of coalition-building in environmental justice struggles
- How alliances produce emancipatory outcomes or reinforce hegemonic structures
- The tensions, conflicts, or exclusions that emerge when certain actors are prioritized over others
Guiding Questions
We encourage conceptual, theoretical, and empirical contributions that address questions such as:
- What kinds of alliances are formed in environmental conflicts—and who benefits or loses from them?
- How are marginalized groups forging new partnerships (e.g., with corporations, development actors, or more-than-human beings), and what are the consequences?
- How do alliances transform environmental governance, local resistance, or political ecology debates?
- When and why do coalitions create new forms of exclusion?

You can find the full roundtable description and submission portal here.
Deadline:
